BC Loses Fr. Conan E. Feigh, O.S.B.

Father Conan E. Feigh, O.S.B., former Benedictine Headmaster and Prior has died.  While in Savannah he was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5588 and BC later honored him with the Benedictine Medal of Excellence.

Former headmaster of Benedictine Military School (BC), Father Conan E. Feigh, O.S.B., died Friday, June 4, shortly before his eightieth birthday. Father Conan was BC Headmaster and Prior at the Benedictine Priory from 1977-1987. At the time of his death he was a monk of Saint Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, PA.

Born June 12, 1930 in Carrolltown, PA, Father Conan was the son of the late Margaret (Lonergan) Feigh and the late Charles A. Feigh. His survivors include one brother and two sisters, Thomas Feigh of St. Mary’s PA; Cecilia (Feigh) Knapp of Dover, DE; and Suzanne (Feigh) Cronan of Carroltown. He was predecessed by a sister, Marjorie (Feigh) Mikula.

Father Conan attended Saint Benedict Parochial School in Carrolltown and graduated in 1948 from Saint Vincent Preparatory School in Latrobe.  He received a bachelor of arts degree in 1953 from Saint Vincent College,, a master of education degree in 1969 from Penn State University and a master of divinity degree from Saint Vincent Seminary in 1974.

On July 2, 1951, Father Conan made his simple profession of vows and on July 11, 1954 made his solemn profession of vows at Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica.  The late Bishop Hugh Lamb, D.D., ordained him as a priest May 26, 1957 at the Archabbey Basilica.

Father Conan served the monastic community in the parish apostolates at Saint Bruno, South Greensburg, PA (1957-1960); Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s, PA (1960-1964) and at Sacred Heart, Jeannette, PA (1964-1965).  While at Sacred Heart in St. Mary’s, he served on Elk County Christian High School’s faculty.  From 1965-1970 Father Conan worked in Guidance/Placement at Saint Vincent College and from 1971-1977 he was the college registrar. In addition, from 1966-1977, he served on the Archabbey Council of Seniors and was on the Saint Vincent College Board of Directors (1970-1975, 1988-1995 and 2000-2010).

He came to Savannah  in 1977 to serve as Benedictine Military School’s headmaster and Prior at the Benedictine Priory. While in Savannah Father Conan was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5588.  After leaving BC in 1987, Father Conan was a campus minister at Penn State University from 1987-2002 and was named director of the Monastery Infirmary.  In 1990 BC honored Father Conan with the Benedictine Medal of Excellence.

A vigil service for Father Conan was June  6 at the Saint Vincent Basilica and Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial for Father Conan June 7 in the Archabbey Basilica.  Internment followed at the Saint Vincent Cemetery. Memorial contributions in honor of Father Conan may be made to the Benedictine Health and Welfare Fund, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA, 15650.
