The Barlow Learning Center

Learning Support Instructional Model

The Barlow Learning Center is designed to support and enhance the academic success of Cadets with diagnosed and documented learning differences. The learning center works with Cadets by providing tools and strategies that empower them to become more successful in their current coursework. Classes are targeted to the individual needs of the Cadet based on his diagnosis and focus on study skills, organization, individual learning styles, and self-advocacy. The learning specialist implements the directives in accordance with school policies and as recommended in the required comprehensive educational psychological evaluation.

Because all Cadets are required to meet our college preparatory curriculum, please be aware that Benedictine Military School does not write IEPs or follow an IEP from a Cadet’s previous school. However, we do put together an accommodation plan that supports our college preparatory track and communicate the plan to his teachers. Cadets meet with the learning specialist at a specified time during the school day. The learning specialist serves Cadets by:
  • Structuring study time
  • Teaching test-taking strategies
  • Teaching study strategies
  • Managing test-taking accommodations
  • Working with classroom teachers to provide other accommodations
  • Interpreting educational evaluations for parents and teachers
  • Maintaining communication with classroom teachers
  • Equipping Cadets to become independent, confident leaders whom can advocate for themselves at the college level
The following criteria must be met to be considered for enrollment in The Barlow Learning Center:
  • Documentation must come from a comprehensive psychological evaluation form a licensed educational psychologist. A diagnosis of ADHD, Processing Disorder, or Specific Learning Disorder should be shared with our Guidance Department prior to enrollment in the learning center. All other diagnoses must be reviewed by Guidance prior to enrollment.
  • The psychological evaluation should be no more than three years old.
  • Satisfactory behavior must be demonstrated in all classes.
