BLACK HISTORY MONTH BC ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Mr. Dexter Reynolds '80

By Noell Barnidge
How did Benedictine Military School help to shape you?

"My initial thoughts about attending BC were filled with irony. I didn’t want to go to BC. I wanted to go to Groves where all of the guys I had played recreation sports with would be going. As kids we often talked about what it was going to be like to play at Groves. My parents, on the other hand, had very different plans for me. They said that you can get that out of your mind because you are going to BC. This was the beginning of what would turn out to be the best experience of my life.

"Upon arriving at BC, you quickly align with your classmates from your parochial school which, in our case, was The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. You also begin to get to know the kids from the other schools like Blessed Sacrament, Nativity, St. James, St. Mary’s, Sacred Heart, and St. Michael’s, to name a few. So you quickly make friends and become one at BC.

"Now begins the instruction of the fundamental traditions and values of BC. You learn that academic excellence, discipline, military discipline and precision, religion, code of honor, and respect that you carry with you the rest of your life. One of my best memories of JROTC is that from classroom instruction and the rifle range I learned to shoot and I’m still a pretty good shooter.

"Furthermore, you still remember priests, teachers, and coaches that helped instruct and inspire you while at BC. In conclusion, BC formed discipline, character, and qualities that we walk with and use today in every facet of life from faith, family, work, and social."

What have you been doing since high school?

"I live in Charlotte, N.C., where I have been for the last 21 years. I moved to Charlotte from Savannah while working as a manager in the home improvement industry, in which I worked for 20 years. I transitioned from home improvement to my current position with United Parcel Service (UPS) about nine years ago.

"After graduating from BC, my close friend Dennis Famble and I decided to attend the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, where I played football and ran track for two years before transferring, and I eventually graduated from Georgia Southern University with a BBA Finance degree. I then moved to Atlanta and once again joined my friend Dennis Famble. In Atlanta, I worked as a distrct sales manager for a major manufacturer of health and beauty products before moving back to Savannah and beginning in the home improvement business.

"I’m looking forward to retiring within the next few years so that Dorena, my wife of 23 years, and I can get in our RV and travel around the country. Also, I am looking forward to seeing more grandchildren from my five children."
