Cannon Commits to Texas Tech

Cannon is the third Cadet quarterback in a row who will play for a Power 4 program.
Holden Geriner from the BC Class of 2022, signed with Auburn, where he earned his degree, before recently entering the transfer portal and signing with Texas State. Luke Kromenhoek, from the Cadet Class of 2024, was next in line as he signed to play at Florida State. He transferred to Mississippi State after his freshman season last fall.
In his first year as a starter last fall, Cannon showed off a special blend of athleticism with his arm strength, speed and football IQ that made him one of the most sought after signal callers in the South. He completed 58% of his passes for 1,352 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions and rushed for 147 yards and three scores in seven games, as his season was interrupted by a shoulder injury. He came back to play in the Cadets final game of the season, a state quarterfinal loss to Blessed Trinity.
Benedictine coach Danny Britt knows he has been blessed with a run of standout quarterbacks in his 14 years leading the program, which includes four state championships. He said Cannon is a special athlete and person.
"Stephen called me and told me he loved Texas Tech and was ready to commit, and they will be getting a great quarterback," Britt said. "He does everything so well. He just sees things on the field and is able to respond — he has that natural instinct combined with his vision and understanding of the game. He knows when to lace one out there, to make a short toss or when to take off and run. Everything just comes so naturally for him."
Cannon is a member of the BC 4x100 relay team that has the top time in Class 4A this season at 41.87. The group includes his football teammates Stanley Smart Jr., a sophomore running back who recently picked up a football offer from Georgia Tech and Bubba Frazier, the star junior receiver whose offers include Georgia and Notre Dame — along with sophomore speedster Eron Mallard, a standout defensive back. Cannon is the second Benedictine junior to announced a big-time commitment in the last 10 days. Defensive tackle Kam Cody announced his commitment to Clemson on March 29.
