But the program is so strong, it just reloads instead of worrying about rebuilding. The Cadets are stacked with talent once again with a squad including 12 players with Division I scholarship offers, including LaDamion Guyton, the 5-star edge who transferred in from Savannah Christian and committed to play at Texas Tech Thursday.
BC has four seniors who have already made their commitments in four-star receiver Bubba Frazier, who is headed north to Notre Dame along with defensive tackle Kam Cody, who committed to Clemson. Defensive back Micah Williams is headed to App State and Cannon is also headed to Lubbock to join a Texas Tech program that's in the national spotlight with its recent recruiting wins.
"We've got a very talented team with 12 kids having D1 offers, that's the most I've ever had on one team," said BC coach Danny Britt, who enters his 15th season leading the program with a 153-34 record with the Cadets that includes four state championships. "We've got impact players on both sides of the ball. Even with all those offers, I'm not sure that it raises our expectations — because they're already off the charts as it is. We're always looking to win a state championship."
When Cannon was sidelined last year, Omari Burse came in at quarterback and did an excellent job as the Cadets went 4-1, including a pair of playoff wins, with Burse behind center. Britt said Burse, now a junior, should see some action in certain offensive packages as a receiver and as a defensive back this season.
But Cannon is healthy and ready for his senior campaign after throwing for 1,352 yards and 11 touchdowns in seven games last year, while rushing for 147 yards and three more scores. He has a talented group of receivers led by Frazier, who doubles as a ball carrier — the lightning quick senior had 46 catches for 753 yards and five scores last year, while rushing for 604 yards and eight scores.
Cannon also has great chemistry with Josh Washington, who holds offers from teams like Georgia Southern and Geogia State. Washington had 37 catches for 566 yards and five touchdowns last year. Junior Eron Mallard should be another playmaker on both sides of the ball.
Stanley Smart Jr. returns as the No. 1 running back and the junior is drawing Power 4 offers with his combination of speed and power. He ran a personal best of 10.63 in the 100 meters last spring and finished sixth in the Class 4A state meet in that event, while also running legs on the Cadet 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay squads that won state gold medals.
Those relay teams included football teammates Frazier, Cannon, Mallard and Cole Henderson, creating an even tighter bond within this football team. Smart led BC with 730 yards rushing last year and is looking to increase his numbers this season.
The Cadets lost their entire starting offensive line to graduation, but are looking forward to the return of senior Carlton Hall. The 6-foot-4, 330-pound tackle held offers including Kentucky, Georgia State and Western Kentucky before he went down with a season-ending knee injury on the sixth play of the Cadets opener against Rabun Gap last year. Hall is on the mend and hopes to be back on the field soon.
BC also got a standout transfer up front in junior Collyn Ward, who transferred in from Wayne County. Cadet alum Patrick Fogarty, who played college ball at Stetson, is back as the offensive line coach after coaching at the college level the last few years. Veteran assistant Trevor Coleman is now an associate head coach who is also in charge of special teams.
"We've got some great skill players returning and our chemistry is a lot better than it was at this point last year," Cannon said. "We've been building on that and I think it's going to be a game changer in our offense — that experience is going to help a lot."
On defense, the Cadets are absolutely stacked in their front seven with Guyton coming off a season with 52 tackles, including 13.5 for losses, with 6.5 sacks in nine games at Savannah Christian to earn All-Greater Savannah first-team honors. Cody was also a first-team selection after recording 75 tackles, with nine for a loss and 6.5 sacks. Junior Gavin Smith is another to watch, along with Isaac Scott III, who is coming back from a season-ending injury last year.
Look for sophomore defensive lineman Jamir Lee to have a big year. The 6-3, 260-pounder had an impressive off season and holds early offers including Miami, Troy and Georgia State.
Larson Little is back as a senior leader after racking up 88 tackles, including seven for a loss to earn All-Region first-team honors last year. Senior Jayden Houston, the son of BC alum and defensive coordinator Galen Houston, has earned the job as a starting inside linebacker. Rasheen Jackson is another starter expected to be an impact player.
The defensive backfield is also a star studded group with Williams coming off a season where he had 80 tackles and four interceptions. Senior Wyatt Estabrook is a ball hawk who led the team with six picks to go along with six passes defended and 63 tackles last year. Senior Jojo Sutton had 55 tackles and picked up an offer from Eastern Kentucky. Sophomore Jonathan Black is another to watch, with Washington also in the defensive rotation.
Frazier was also seeing action as a defensive back at a practice last week and said he is ready to go both ways if called upon.
"We're getting better every day of practice," Frazier said. "Stephen is a great quarterback and he knows how to make play changes at the line and make the right reads to get the ball in our hands to make plays. He makes our job so much easier. I have a goal to get more than 1,000 yards receiving, but the No. 1 goal isn't about me, it's about our team winning another state championship. We have the talent and we're ready to get back to the championship game and win it."
