Head coaches from the public and private school teams in Chatham County vote on the award, along with local media. The award dates back to 1976. Karl DeMasi, the former coach and an avid supporter of local high school athletics with his Prep Sports Report, revived it after a six-year hiatus from 2010-15.
Frazier has elite speed and was a star on the BC track and field team. Last spring, he posted a personal best 100-meter time of 10.54 and finished third in the Class 4A state meet in the event with a time of 10.72. He also ran legs on the Cadets state champion 4x100 meter and 4x200 meter relay squads.
Through the first round of the playoffs, Frazier leads the team with 41 catches for 627 yards and 10 touchdowns and has 186 yards rushing and three more scores on 31 carries. He has a pair of interceptions in limited action on defense and more than 300 yards in returns with 1,121 all purpose yards. He has a pick six
and a punt return for a score among his 15 total touchdowns.
Frazier said the goal is for the Cadets to close out the season by winning the Class 4A state title.
"Our mindset is just thinking about taking it one game at a time and going 1-0 every week," said Frazier, who will enroll early at Notre Dame after the holidays. "We need to stay disciplined and eliminate those little errors that can cost you in close game."
Frazier said he looks up to top NFL receivers like Tyreek Hill and Odell Beckham Jr., and studies their games to increase his football IQ. "But I want to be myself, I want to be Bubba Frazier," he said. "I want people to see me as a hardworking player who will do whatever he needs to do to help his team, and is a game-changer who loves to go out and ball."
