  Cadets Honored by the Greater Savannah Hall of Fame

  Two standout student-athletes from Benedictine Military School will be recognized among the region’s elite at the 2026 ceremony hosted by the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame on Monday, May 4, at the Alee Shriners Temple.

  Senior quarterback Stephen Cannon has been named the recipient of the prestigious Lawton M. Calhoun Award, presented annually to the Overall High School Athlete of the Year. Cannon delivered a stellar season on the gridiron, throwing for 2,266 yards and 26 touchdowns with just four interceptions, while adding 625 rushing yards and nine scores. He led the Cadets to the Class 4A state title game and earned Region 1-4A Offensive Player of the Year honors, along with All-State recognition. He is the 11th Cadet to receive the honor since 1980. 

  A true multi-sport talent, Cannon also excelled in track and field, helping Benedictine capture state championships in the 4x100 and 4x200 relay events, and contributed on the basketball court. He has signed with Texas Tech Red Raiders and enrolled early.

  Joining Cannon in the spotlight is senior midfielder Asher Herrin, who has been named Soccer Player of the Year. A three-year letterman, Herrin has tallied 14 goals and three assists through the first 12 matches of his senior campaign. Known for his relentless effort and leadership, he has been a key figure in Benedictine’s postseason success during his varsity career.

  “Herrin is a playmaker and workhorse in the midfield,” said head coach Charlie Moore, praising his captain’s impact and consistency.

  The honors mark a fitting milestone for Cannon and Herrin, who first shared recognition as co-recipients of the Dewitt Award as eighth graders. Years later, both athletes now cap off decorated high school careers with some of Savannah’s highest athletic honors.

  Unforgettable Playoffs Run for Soccer

  The Cadets put together an electrifying run in the GHSA Class AAAA State Playoffs, proving they could compete anywhere, against anyone. They opened with a strong victory over East Forsyth, then delivered a heart-stopping upset in the Sweet 16—taking down Region 4’s No. 1 seed, Pace Academy, 4–3 in a thrilling overtime battle. Their postseason journey continued on the road at Marist in the Elite Eight, where their championship hopes came to an end with a 5–1 loss.

• Exciting Win Over Unbeaten Islands

  The Benedictine soccer team got off to an explosive start against cross-town rival Islands as the Cadets found the back of the net twice in the first 25 minutes behind a goal by Parker Lewis on Asher Herrin's assist and an impressive header from Ben Harvey on a feed from Nikos Hanks on Tuesday night.

  But Islands got right back into the match with seven seconds remaining in the half when JJ Stein was fouled in the left side of the box and converted his penalty kick. The momentum swung the Sharks' way in the second half as Islands was constantly on the attack.

  Stein made a smart cross to Andrew McLaughlin, who blasted one in from point-blank range for the equalizer in the 50th minute, and the Sharks had several quality chances down the stretch ― including a free kick from Stein that just missed.
  

  It came down to penalty kicks (without overtime periods being played), and Benedictine came out on top when senior keeper Ben Weisel dove to his left to stop a penalty shot by Jack Mace, with Cadet senior Mills Hollis then making his to give the Cadets the win 5-4 on penalty kicks.

  The non-region setback was the first loss of the season for Islands (15-1), which entered the week ranked second in the state in Class 3A. Benedictine improved to 10-4 with the victory.

  "This was the toughest match we have played, to be honest," Benedictine coach Charles Moore said. "I thought we were better first off, but then we made a mistake and didn't clear it, and they got the penalty kick, which was a good call. That was a bit of a kicker, and then they were the better team in the second half. They played directly, and it was a job for us to cope with it.

  "Overall it we have two really good teams, and it came down to fine margins. I don't like PKs win or lose, but it was a great match."

  The junior was named the Co-MVP for a Cadet squad that reached the Class 4A state playoffs. He was a first-team All-Region 1-4A selection. He had nine assists and three goals on the year.
  Parker Lewis, Senior Midfield
  Lewis was an All-Region 1-4A selection and was named the Co-MVP of the Cadet team. He had 17 goals and seven assists on the season.
  Ben Weisel, Junior Goalie
  Weisel had another solid season in the net for the Cadets, who came on strong at the end of the season. He was selected to play in the Coastal Empire All-Star game.
  John Brenton, Senior Defense
  Brenton is an anchor on the backline for the Cadets.
