  • Baseball Lights up the Season

The Cadet baseball team’s following grew with every win this season! The Cadets finished an incredible year in the GHSA Class AAAA Semifinals, falling to North Oconee — a team that had not allowed a single run throughout the State Competition until facing the Cadets. North Oconee took the series 6-2 and 2-1, but our Cadets competed like true champions every step of the way.
The team finished the season with an outstanding 31-8 record and captured the Region 1AAAA Title. We are incredibly proud of our athletes and the brotherhood that supported them throughout the playoff run.
Thank you to everyone who supported Cadet Baseball this season. We’re already looking forward to next year!

  • Final Four Next for Cadets

With his Benedictine baseball team trailing visiting Cambridge 8-1 in the top of the third inning in a win-or-go-home scenario Thursday, Cadet baseball coach Jason Pascual brought star shortstop Omari Burse to the mound in an effort to stop the bleeding.
Burse, a junior who has committed to play at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, put out the fire on the mound and ignited the Cadet offense with an incredible performance at the plate.
He led the Cadets to an unforgettable comeback that culminated with a walk-off 10-9 win in the bottom of the eighth inning as he scored the winning run when junior Kai Hernandez-Gambill was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to end it.
Burse threw 89 pitches over six innings of work — allowing four hits and one earned run, in the top of the eighth, while striking out three and walking one to earn the most important victory of his high school career. In the third inning, he hit a three-run blast to left field that cut the Bears lead to 8-4. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Burse laced a 2-run homer over the tall fence in centerfield to tie the game. He went 3-for-5 with four runs and five RBIs.
The Cadets improved to 31-6 on the season and advanced to the Class 4A state semifinals. They will host North Oconee (28-6) in a best-of-three series starting with a double header on Thursday, May 14th, at time to be announced.
"I feel great, I feel like all the hard work that we put in as a team is paying off," Burse said. "The way we play together is a brotherhood — BC is a brotherhood, and when we stay together nobody can beat us."
Burse said he kept a positive attitude coming into pitch down seven runs.
"I'm a competitive guy, so I always think I'm the best player when I'm at the plate or on the mound and I think I'm going to beat you" he said. "That's just how I am."
There were clutch plays from throughout the Benedictine roster to complement Burse's production.
BC right fielder Ike Ross went down with an apparent broken bone in his arm in a play in the outfield and freshman Will Dixon came into replace the senior. Dixon delivered in the bottom of the fifth with a line shot into left center for a two-run double that closed the deficit to 8-6.
The Bears started the game with a home run on the first pitch of the game as Patrick Spencer went deep on BC starter Ridge Reddick. Cambridge scored six runs in the second inning on four hits and looked to be in control. Burse entered in the third with runners on first and second with no outs and got out of the jam, and the Bears didn't score again until the top of the eighth.
Cambridge catcher Will Degenhard hit a grounder that shortstop Noah Harris backhanded and his throw to first got away, allowing Gavin Gebhardt to score the go-ahead run with no outs. But Burse toughed it out to get out of the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the frame, Elliott Zeigler singled to right, bringing up Burse, who hit a hard shot to the pitcher, who turned to make the play at second, but Sebastian Peralta couldn't hang on to the ball. Then, the umpires ruled that Peralta obstructed Zeigler from advancing and allowed Zeigler to take third.
That brought up standout sophomore Noah Harris and the lefty stroked a double to the wall in right center to score Zeigler with the tying run, as Burse advanced third. Harris went 3 for 5 with two RBIs.
Mason Diamond was intentionally walked, bringing up lefty Hernandez-Gambill, who took a 3-2 pitch on his right buttock to bring in Burse with the winning run as chaos ensued with a Cadet celebration.
"This game ranks up there, especially with the stakes that were involved — it was fantastic," said BC coach Jason Pascual, in his third season leading the program. "These guys never stopped believing — you see how happy they are celebrating with the student body out there, their friends and their brothers. They never stopped believing and that's a testament to what their season has been."
Hernandez-Gambill has been a big part of the team's success, playing first base, pitching and hitting in the middle of the order. The junior said he felt confident at the plate with the game on the line.
"I felt like I was the perfect person to be up to bat in that situation," Hernandez-Gambill said. "I was just looking to put the ball in play to get the run in. But then I got hit, and that got the job done. That's the 15th time I've been hit by a pitch this year, and its the first time I was smiling after getting hit."

  • Most Dramatic Comeback Sends Cadets to Final Four

Benedictine Military School pulled off one of the most dramatic playoff comebacks of the Georgia High School baseball season, rallying from an 8-1 deficit to beat Cambridge High School 10-9 in eight innings in a win-or-go-home matchup.
The game turned when junior shortstop Omari Burse moved from shortstop to the mound in the third inning. Burse shut down Cambridge the rest of the way, throwing six innings while allowing just one earned run, four hits, and striking out three.
He also carried the offense. A towering three-run homer to left suddenly brought life back into the stadium and cut the deficit to 8-4. Then, with the Cadets still fighting in the sixth inning, Burse delivered again — crushing a two-run missile over the centerfield fence to tie the game and send the crowd into chaos.
Finally, in the bottom of the eighth, the Cadets loaded the bases with the season on the line. The tension was unbearable. Then junior Kai Hernandez-Gambill stepped in and was hit by a pitch, forcing home Burse for a breathtaking 10-9 walk-off victory.
Players stormed the field. Fans erupted. A team that once trailed by seven runs was suddenly headed to the state semifinals. Hernandez-Gambill said it was the first time he had smiled after getting hit by a pitch!!
Benedictine improved to 32-6 and advanced to the Georgia Class AAAA semifinals, where the Cadets will host North Oconee High School in a best-of-three series beginning May 14.
The Cadets aren’t just playing — they’re making a statement! GO Cadets!!!

  • Cadets Win Ware Series- Tied for 1st in Region 1AAAA

Ike Ross just needed to put the ball in play, and Benedictine needed one more moment.
Both came through. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1 and with runners on second and third, Ross singled up the middle, bringing in the walk-off tying and winning runs and giving the Cadets a dramatic 6-5 victory.
In the decisive third game, Mason O’Neil entered in relief as Ware County pressured early, then delivered six dominant, scoreless innings, shutting down their offense and clinching a 6-1 win and the series for Benedictine.
It was a week that showed exactly who the Cadets are.
In game one, Benedictine (21-5/10-2) took the lead right away in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Ware County (17-9/10-2) came back and scored four runs in innings six and seven to take a 5-4 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Ross lined a single up the middle for the walk-off game-winner, giving the Cadets game one.
The Cadets backed the comeback with 10 hits. Kai Hernandez-Gambill drove in two runs, while Landen Harris and Noah Harris each added two hits to keep the offense moving.
“Our players showed tremendous resiliency coming back in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1,” Benedictine head coach Jason Pascual said. “They showed tremendous fight and focus this past week.”
Ware County answered in Game 2 with an 11-5 win, putting pressure back on Benedictine and forcing a decisive third game.
    The response came quickly.
After two days off between game two and game three of the series, the Cadets returned with a different level of focus, and it showed immediately with a 2-1 lead they never relinquished, resulting in a  6-1 victory. Mason O’Neil came on in relief at the top of the second inning and controlled the game, allowing no runs, just three hits over six innings while keeping Ware County off balance. At the plate, Omari Burse and Elliott Zeigler led the offense with three hits apiece, as the Cadets produced 10 hits.
“If our guys do what they’ve been doing all year, playing for one another and trusting one another, everything will take care of itself,” Pascual said. “If all three phases of the game are in place, we’ll be successful.”
The series win keeps Benedictine tied for first place, but more importantly, the Cadets now hold the tiebreaker with one week remaining over Ware.
They will face New Hampstead in a three-game series beginning Monday at New Hampstead, followed by a doubleheader on Wednesday at Benedictine. A sweep would secure the region title.
“One game at a time is a cliché, but it’s appropriate,” Pascual said. “They’ve worked so hard to get to this point, and they’ll continue to do so this week.”
It started with Ross in the final inning of the opening game.
It was finished by O’Neil on the mound in the final game of the series.
Now Benedictine has its chance to finish the drill and win a regular-season title.

  • Savannah Morning News "Cadets are Excelling"

The Benedictine baseball team is one of the hottest programs in the state of Georgia, as the Cadets have reeled off 14 wins in a row under Head Coach Jason Pascual, in his third season leading the program.
BC (14-2) is ranked No. 5 among Class 4A schools in the Coaches' Box Georgia poll as the Cadets are looking to make a playoff run this season. BC has reached the playoffs the last three years, but hasn't advanced past the second round since 2022, when they made the state semis behind star outfielder Justin Thomas, now in the Astros organization.
Benedictine won state titles in 2014 and 2018, and reached the finals in 2021, when the Cadets lost to Marist in the senior year of Carter Holton, who went on to star at Vanderbilt and is now a pitcher in the minor leagues for the Braves, who picked him in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
Pascual took over after Kevin Farmer stepped down as the Cadet coach after a stellar career following the 2023 season. This Cadet squad is winning behind a mix of veteran leadership and an influx of young talent.'s
The Cadets have a senior leader at catcher in Mason Diamond, who has signed with South Georgia State College. Senior pitcher Colvin Proto has signed with Marion Military Institute, while classmate Mason O'Neil, a standout first baseman and pitcher, is headed to Flagler College.
Junior shortstop Omari Burse has been on fire at the plate — the University of Alabama-Birmingham commit is hitting .500 with a pair of homers, 18 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases.
"I've empowered our seniors to lead our team, and they have been doing a great job," Pascual said. "And they all have been keys to our success. "Omari (Burse) has tremendous athletic ability, as he has also shown on the football field. He is off to a great start and is so important to our team. The younger guys, led by the Harris twins, have come out and played great all-around baseball. They are special players."
The Cadet youth movement is led by the Harris twins, Noah and Landen. The standout sophomores have burst on the scene in their first year on the varsity. Noah Harris leads off and plays second base and pitcher. He is hitting .542 with nine extra base hits and 22 RBIs. A right-hander who bats left like his twin, Noah is 4-0 on the mound with a 1.11 ERA.
"I think our culture has been the key," said Diamond, who is hitting .346 with two home runs and 16 RBIs. "We're playing for each other instead of just playing as an individual. I think we can hit from the top down in our lineup. That's our biggest jump forward from last year"
Diamond's assessment is spot on, as the Cadets are averaging 10.6 runs per game. Proto, a senior pitcher whose father, Mike, is the Cadet pitching coach, loves the run support from his teammates. He pitched four scoreless innings in a 13-0 Region 1-4A win over Warner Robins on Friday as he improved to 5-1 this season.
"I've gotten better with my command of my off speed stuff and I'm getting ahead early in the counts, which has been a game changer," Colvin Proto said. "I added a cutter in the offseason. I've been playing with Mason (Diamond) since we were 10 years old, so we're really close. We have an energy around our team this year, everyone loves each other and we hang out outside of baseball. It's that camaraderie that has built us."
The outfield has a group that has stepped in as key contributors with Joiner Uhrich, Jadon Muller, Ike Ross, and Ben Kleinpeter all seeing time. Sophomore Elliott Zeigler has also stepped up at third base.
Mason O'Neil, a lefty on the mound and at the plate, who also plays first base, earned the win in the second game Friday over Warner Robins as the Cadets rolled to a 12-0 victory in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. He threw four innings to earn the win as he improved to 2-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.00. He is hitting .348 with two homers and 12 RBIs.
O'Neil, who is headed to St. Augustine to play at Flagler next year, said everything seems to be clicking with all aspects of the team this year.
"Coach Pascual believes in us," O'Neil said. "He puts the lineup up in the dugout and just lets us do our thing and play," O'Neil said. "He knows how to manage everything. And it's insane the way we've been hitting, everybody is hitting, even the guys coming off the bench. We've just got a great energy going, everyone is playing free."

  • Dreams Come True for BC Grad Justin Thomas, Jr.

Benedictine Class of 2022, Justin Thomas, Jr., was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 11th round as the 335th pick. Thomas Jr. was a star in baseball and football in his prep days at Benedictine and started his college career at Georgia. After his freshman year, he left Athens to play junior college ball at Florida South Western State College, where he earned NJCAA All-American honors before transferring to Arkansas. He was named to the 2025 College World Series All-Tournament team as competing for the Razorbacks this season.
"I didn't know the Astros were going to take me and then I got a text from a friend saying 'Congratulations,' and then my mom showed me that I had just been picked. That's when it really hit me — I almost broke down in tears. It's been my lifelong dream since I was a little kid, and it seems surreal that it's real now, " stated Thomas.  Thomas Jr. is known for his excellent glove, speed and range in the outfield and his solid, powerful approach at the plate. He hit .302 with an on-base percentage of .438 and an OPS of .953 this year for Arkansas and had 6 doubles, a triple, 9 homers, 47 runs, 38 RBIs and 7 stolen bases, with just two errors as he started 54 of 65 games in center field as a junior this spring. "I had a lot of former teammates, coaches and friends who reached out to say congratulations and say how deserving I was to be drafted. It does seem like all the hard work I've put in has paid off. But this starts a new chapter in my life, and everything I've accomplished in the past doesn't matter any more. I have to go out and prove myself again, and I'm ready to do that."  The Astos said they will discuss where I'll be playing this summer!
