  • The Houston Impact on BC

When Jayden Houston arrived at Benedictine to join the Cadet football program—where his father, Galen, a BC alum, serves as defensive coordinator—his journey to a starting role was anything but easy. Jayden worked his way up the hard way, earning respect as a scout team player, then as a backup linebacker and special teams contributor, before finally breaking through as a defensive starter his senior year.
Now, Jayden is adding a new chapter to his family’s Benedictine legacy, playing a key role on a Cadet squad that entered the GHSA playoffs ranked No. 4 in Class 4A by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The significance of this season runs deeper than football. Galen Houston—once a standout Benedictine linebacker who went on to play at Shaw University—now has the rare opportunity to coach his own son on a defense filled with talent. Their shared journey has become a powerful example of perseverance, mentorship, and family tradition within the program.
"I knew Jayden needed development athletically and academically when he came to Benedictine, and that it was going to be a process to achieve his goals," Galen said. "But he has really grinded, and now he's reaping the benefits of his hard work, dedication, and commitment. I'm really proud of him." Jayden wears No. 11, the number his dad wore when he played at Shaw, and is known as "Sticks" to his teammates. On a team full of star power, he has become a leader on the field and in the locker room. He is receiving college recruiting interest from smaller programs in the Southeast.
Together, the Houstons embody the strength of a father–son bond built through discipline, growth, and a shared love for Benedictine football, making their impact on the Cadets’ defense even more meaningful.

  • Five Cadets Nominated for Finocchiaro Award

Nominations for the 45th Michael Finocchiaro Memorial Outstanding Football Player Award, recognizing the top high school football player in Savannah, as voted on by Savannah head coaches and media, were recently announced by the award's coordinator, Karl DeMasi. The winner will be announced on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27.
Inspired by the Heisman Trophy, Finocchiaro, a Benedictine alum and avid high school football fan, started the award in 1976 in an effort to recognize local players. He died in 2001. The award continued until a hiatus from 2010 to 2015, before DeMasi brought it back. Cadets nominated this year are Stephen Cannon, Kameron Cody, Bubba Frazier, Ladamion Guyton and Caron Hall.

  • One Down, Four to go

After a sluggish first half in their Class 4A playoff opener against East Forsyth, Benedictine coach Danny Britt rallied his team with an emotional halftime speech inspired by Friday Night Lights, reminding his seniors that “Forever starts right now.” The Cadets responded with a dominant second half, scoring 35 unanswered points to secure a 42–7 win. The victory improved BC to 8–2 and they will host Cass (9–2) on Friday, Nov. 21, at Memorial Stadium at 7:30 PM in the Sweet 16 of the GHSA Class AAAA Playoffs.

  • Sweet 16 Next for Cadets

Benedictine found itself in an unusual position at halftime of its Class AAAA playoff opener against visiting East Forsyth. The Cadets, typically sharp and energized, looked flat through the first two quarters and went into the locker room in a 7–7 tie. Head Coach Danny Britt knew his team needed more than just adjustments on the whiteboard—they needed an emotional spark!
A longtime fan of the classic football film Friday Night Lights, Britt reached for inspiration from one of its most memorable moments. Channeling Billy Bob Thornton’s portrayal of Coach Gaines, he reminded his seniors that “Forever starts right now,” urging them to take ownership of the moment and play with the urgency and pride that had defined their season. The message hit home.
When Benedictine returned to the field, the Cadets looked like a different team. They took control immediately, dominating all phases of the game in a lopsided second half. The offense clicked into rhythm, piling on points, while the defense smothered East Forsyth’s attempts to respond. By the final whistle, Benedictine had turned a tense tie into a commanding 42–7 victory.
With the win, the Cadets improved to 8–2 on the season and into the second round of the Class AAAA State Playoffs. Their next challenge comes quickly: they’ll host Cass (9–2) on Friday, Nov. 21, at Memorial Stadium. Riding the momentum from their second-half surge, the Cadets head into the matchup with renewed confidence and a reminder of what’s at stake—because, as Britt told them, forever starts now!

Benedictine's football team started the season with a pair of losses as head coach Danny Britt tested his squad against Class 6A powers Buford and Colquitt County, before the Cadets started play in the rugged Region 1-4A.
But those setbacks built character in a battle-tested BC squad that won the region crown and has reeled off seven straight wins headed into the Class 4A state playoffs.
The Cadets closed out the regular season in dominating fashion with a 49-13 win over New Hampstead in a Region 1-4A game at Pooler Stadium.

Quarterback Stephen Cannon led the offense, throwing three touchdown passes as BC built a 24–3 halftime lead. Cannon connected with Frazier on an 8-yard scoring pass and hit Eron Mallard for long touchdowns of 75 and 43 yards. Parker Lewis added a pair of field goals for the Cadets. Bubba Frazier, the senior receiver who has committed to Notre Dame, showed off his running ability as he rushed for three first-half touchdowns. Junior running back Stanley Smart Jr. had a pair of rushing touchdowns before the half and Josh Washington also ran for a score.
Benedictine (2-2, 0-0) will open Region 1-4A play on Friday, Sept. 26, when the Cadets hit the road again to face Ware County (5-0, 0-0). BC entered last week ranked No. 4 among Class 4A teams in the state by the AJC, and Ware County was No. 5.
  • Cadets Win on the Raod

Three different quarterbacks were under center for Burke County in its 41-0 loss against Benedictine on Friday night as senior signal-caller Sean Vandiver was out of the line-up. Burke County missed its three-year starting quarterback greatly. Many drives for the Bears ended in part due to shaky play from their rotating trio at the position.
Meanwhile, the Cadets' offense, led by senior quarterback and Texas Tech commit Stephen Cannon was humming. Cannon threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. Those two scores through the air were both to senior receiver and Notre Dame commit Bubba Frazier.
The first score was in the red zone with three minutes to go in the first quarter. The other was a 55-yard bomb in the second near the four-minute mark. By halftime, Benedictine held a 14-0 lead.
“When we’re going, we’re going, we’re really tough to stop,” Cannon said postgame. “Obviously, we weren’t perfect today, but I think we’re rolling in the right direction.”
The third quarter was where the Cadets distanced themselves. Cannon got the scoring started with a 26-yard rush to the house three minutes in. After arguably Burke County’s best offensive drive stalled out due to a fumble in the red zone, junior running back Stanley Smart Jr. went nearly 80 yards down the field for a touchdown.
Then, after an errant pass by the Bears got intercepted, junior Cole Henderson broke free for a 70-yard touchdown with seconds to go in the third. The score had ballooned to 34-0. A 7-yard run by sophomore running back Chris Stokes would cap off Benedictine’s first win of the season.
“We were hungover from the loss last week and with Buford,” Benedictine head coach Danny Britt said. “It took us a minute to get rolling. It was very shaky at first. But I felt once we did, I felt like we played fast.”
  • A Rainy Football Friday

Benedictine football coach Danny Britt knew his team would be facing the toughest of challenges in a non-region matchup with Class 6A powerhouse Buford as the Wolves came to Savannah's Memorial Stadium ranked ninth in the nation by the USA Today Network on Friday night.
Mother Nature threw in a wrench into one of the most anticipated Week 2 games in Georgia as lightning storms delayed the kickoff until 9:21 p.m., with another lightning delay pushing things back midway through the first quarter.
The Cadets, ranked No. 2 among Class 4A teams in the state by the AJC, hung tough for a quarter, but Buford, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, just had too much talent and depth to overcome — as the Wolves rolled to a dominating 42-14 victory in a game that ended at 12:19 a.m.
The BC Sports game crew of Christian Goeckel and Kevin Thomas reported that the Wolves have 33 players holding scholarship offers, and Buford won the battle up front on both sides of the ball behind a wealth of talent in the trenches.
"That’s what I told the guys, when you play a team like that, there are things you have to correct, but you have to also realize we won’t see anything like that again," Britt said of Buford's stacked roster. "The sheer depth, the different tight ends they were running out — it was ridiculous. But that’s part of it when your playing a team like that. We’ve got to figure out a way to get healthy and certainly a 4A school playing a team like that when you’re not healthy, that’s what’s going to happen."
Defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Wright, a senior committed to Texas A&M and Dre Quinn, a senior edge headed to Clemson, caused havoc all night as they helped lead a defense that shut down the Cadet run game, while keeping the pressure on Benedictine quarterback Stephen Cannon, the senior headed to Texas Tech.
Senior offensive lineman Graham Houston, a UGA commit, helped pave the way for the Wolves ground game as a number of backs had impact performances. Dylan McCoy, a senior committed to NC State, rushed for 90 yards and a pair of scores on 10 carries, while his classmate Tyriq Green (Georgia) ran eight times for 44 yards and two scores. Brian Stokes added 57 yards on five carries as the Wolves rushed for 235 yards on the night.
Senior quarterback Dayton Raiola (Nebraska) was 5 of 10 passing for 114 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Braylon Williams had two catches for 75 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown, and Cameron Hurst had a scoring grab.
Benedictine was held to 57 yards rushing and 104 yards of total offense. Junior Stanley Smart Jr. rushed for 59 yards on 17 carries. Cannon connected with a wide open Bubba Frazier, the senior committed to Notre Dame, for a 24-yard score midway through the first quarter as the Cadets tied the game at 7-7, but Buford took control after that with 35 straight points. Cannon slipped out of a tackle and scored from four yards out with 4:43 left for the final points of the game.
The Cadets were coming off a 27-24 loss on a last second field goal at Colquitt County last week in a game where BC was flagged 15 times, many for unsportsmanlike conduct. BC had just two penalties for 20 yards against Buford, and Britt said that was a positive he can take from the game.
"I don't think I saw anything that really impressed me tonight," Britt said of the Cadets performance. "But I’m proud of them and I love them and we’re going to be a very good football team. That’s what I told them, and when we get in our division, it will be a completely different look."
Buford coach Bryant Appling is in his seventh year leading the Wolves. He led Buford to state titles in his first three seasons, and to the semifinals in 2024. Last year, Benedictine traveled to Buford and nearly upset the Wolves in a 29-28 setback. Buford christened a state-of-the-art $62 million stadium with a win over Milton last week in a game that was televised on ESPN2.

Sometimes we like to stay the night before, but we didn’t this time to see if they could handle some adversity, then they got even more with all the weather delays — but sometimes that seems to make us even more focused. We’ll pull out of here at 1 a.m. and get home at 6 in the morning, so I’m really proud of how we played tonight."
Benedictine (0-2) will be on the road to face Burke County next week. Buford (2-0) has a bye before hosting Roswell on Sept. 5.

  • BC vs Colquitt

    Benedictine at Colquitt County
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium, Moultrie
Records, rankings: Benedictine (7-5 in 2024) is No. 2 in Class 4A; Colquitt County (8-4 in 2024) is No. 7 in 6A.
Things to know: Both had off seasons in 2024, but all signs point toward their revivals. Benedictine finished 7-5, ending a streak of three 13-win seasons that included 2021 and 2022 state titles. Stephen Cannon, a quarterback committed to Texas Tech, was injured late in the 2024 regular season and did not return. He’ll be joined in the comeback by preseason all-state players Bubba Frazier, Kameron Cody and LaDamion Guyton. Despite the 2024 turmoil and tough schedule, Benedictine still managed to reach the Class 4A quarterfinals. Colquitt County had won 13 and 12 games in Sean Calhoun’s first two seasons but slid to 8-4 after graduating most of its offensive weapons and starting a freshman quarterback, Cohen Lawson. Colquitt County’s most conspicuous player is RB Jae Lamar, who has committed to Georgia. He rushed for 885 yards in his first season of high school football. He has run a 4.36-second 40-yard dash. Both teams played national programs in their openers last season but did not renew those (Colquitt County vs. West of Utah and Benedictine vs. Rabun Gap), opening up their schedules to play each other.
In 1951, Benedictine played Moultrie High School to a 13-13 tie. At that time, Moultrie High School was the primary high school serving Colquitt County. Then in 1968, Colquitt County High School. was opened their doors to the students of their county. So while Benedictine has never officially played "Colquitt County High School", it has played against the predecessor school that served the same community — Moultrie High.
  • BC Approach to the 2025 Season

The Benedictine football team is coming off a 7-5 season that might seem disappointing at first glance as it followed three straight 13-win campaigns that included back-to-back state titles. But a deeper look shows that the Cadets never stopped fighting to reach the Class 4A state quarterfinals as a No. 3 seed playing one of the state's toughest schedules.
And the Cadets dealt with adversity as starting quarterback Stephen Cannon was injured in the sixth game of the season, returning to action in the season-ending playoff loss at Blessed Trinity.
The Cadets lost some big-time talent to graduation in edge Third Scroggins (Miami), offensive tackle Jacobe Ward (Auburn) and kicker Connor Ferguson, who signed as a preferred walk-on with Georgia.

  • SMN Top Returning Running Backs

The anticipation is building as the high school football regular season in Georgia is set to kickoff on Friday, Aug. 15. Padded practices start this week as teams, players and coaches continue to put in the work they hope will lead to memorable seasons and playoff success. Running backs are always in the spotlight and there are a number of talented ball carriers returning in the Greater Savannah area. Stanley Smart Jr. is racking up the recruiting interest before starting his junior season as he holds offers including Auburn, Duke, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech and Minnesota. He led the Cadets with 730 yards rushing, with three touchdowns and also caught six passes for 83 yards and another score. Notre Dame commit Bubba Frazier is better known as a receiver, the position he is set to play with the Fighting Irish, but he is also a game breaker carrying the ball for the Cadets. He rushed for 554 yards and eight touchdowns last season to go along with his 43 receptions for 709 yards and four scores as he earned All-Greater Savannah first-team honors. Go Cadets!
  • Stanley Smart Spotlighted by Savannah Morning News

Benedictine running back Stanley Smart Jr. is recognized for his ability to make big plays and his blazing speed. Last spring, Smart ran a personal best of 10.63 in the 100 meters and finished sixth in the Class 4A state meet in that event, while also running legs on the Cadet 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay teams that won gold medals.
Cadet football coach Danny Britt loves having that kind of explosiveness in his offense, but said Smart, a rising junior, is also a complete football player who checks all the boxes.
"Stanley is very fast, but he's also very physical," Britt said. "He's just under 200 pounds now at 5-foot-11, and it's solid muscle. He's dedicated to the weight room and getting stronger every day. He's in our Iron Cadet Elite Club with a bench of more than 300 pounds, a squat around 450, and a power clean in the 300-pound range. He's tough to bring down, and we're expecting great things from him this year."
As a sophomore, Smart led the Cadets with 730 yards rushing, with three touchdowns on the ground. He also caught six passes for 83 yards and a score.
College recruiters have taken notice and Smart holds 11 offers, including Georgia Tech, Auburn, Duke, Texas Tech and Minnesota.

  • Top Returning Linemen

Offensive linemen often don't receive the same recognition as skill position players, but their contributions are crucial to building a successful football team. They take pride in doing the dirty work, developing as a unit with a diverse range of skills, and playing with a high football IQ. Getting the job done in the trenches is a big part of winning on Friday nights. Senior Caiou Hall and Junior Collyn Ward were selected as top returning linemen.
The 6-4, 330-pounder injured his knee on the sixth play of the Cadets' opener against Rabun Gap last year and missed the rest of the season. The senior is on the mend and ready for BC's season opener at Colquitt County. He has offers from Kentucky, Georgia State, and Western Kentucky. Ward, the 6-2, 285-pounder is versatile and expected to be a key contributor this year for the Cadets.

In recent years, the Greater Savannah area has become a hotbed of quarterback talent with players such as Benedictine alums Luke Kromenhoek (now at Mississippi State) and Holden Geriner (now at Texas State after playing at Auburn). And the wealth of talent is still evident as the 2025 season is set to begin in August.
We took a look at the best returning quarterbacks to watch in the Greater Savannah area. Here are the top signal callers in the area as the high school football season approaches.  Out of the ten quarterbacks recognized, two are Cadets!
Stephen Cannon, Class of 2026,  was a standout in his first season starting for the Cadets as he showed off his athleticism with a rifle arm, ability to run and high football IQ. His season was limited to seven games due to an injury that he fought through to return from in the last game of the season. He threw for 1,352 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions and ran for 147 yards and three scores. He has committed to play at Texas Tech.
Omari Burse, Class of 2027, was thrust into the starting role when Cannon was hurt last season and performed well, completing 62% of his passes for 988 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions, with a pair of rushing touchdowns.
